Skills / My role

I led UX research, visual direction & UI utilising Figma.

Challenge / Opportunity

Calibrating Disguise’s XR stage was a black-box ritual—dozens of engineer-only steps, zero documentation, and precious studio hours bleeding away—so we tore it down under lockdown, fusing live user tests, on-site workflow mapping, and rapid-fire design sprints to rebuild a calibration flow any operator could run on the first try.

Overview

Disguise Designer's XR workflow is an advanced tool that empowers users to create virtual stages and set extensions using LED video and external hardware. The XR calibration workflow underwent a significant redesign during its beta phase, resulting in a drastic improvement in usability.

Approach

As a UX designer, I collaborated closely with the development team and senior stakeholders to ensure that user research, on-site design input, workflow documentation, and user feedback were integrated into the rapid redesign of an extended reality calibration workflow. The project, which spanned five months during the 2021 UK lockdown, was conducted at Disguise's XR Studio in London.

Kind words from clients & co-workers

As a single person UX team and also the first UX role in the company, James built the capability from the ground up and brought valuable UX insight to all aspects of the business, always approaching the often difficult task of championing UX amongst the developers with a bright and positive attitude. He gets involved with everything, from providing qualitative and quantitative user research for sales, marketing and product through to insightful UI design on both small improvements and building out new workflows for features with the development team.
